Clarkson (40), streaking Jazz win showdown vs Simmons, 76ers

Jordan ClarksonJordan Clarkson scored a season-high 40 points to send the streaking Utah Jazz past the Philadelphia 76ers 134-123 in a matchup of conference leaders Monday night despite a career-best 42 points from Ben Simmons.

Clarkson hit a career-high eight 3-pointers and Donovan Mitchell added 24 points to help the Jazz overcome an early 14-point deficit. Utah (23-5) has won eight straight games and 19 of 20.

How an elbow to the face sparked Michigan basketball’s big rally at Wisconsin.

The turning point in Michigan basketball’s 67-59 win at Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon involved an outstretched elbow and Mike Smith’s face.

With just over 18 minutes remaining and the Wolverines trailing by 10, Smith went up to contest Brad Davison’s layup.

Davison’s attempt missed. But his left elbow did not, connecting squarely with Smith’s head.

Michigan is senior point guard went down in a heap on his own baseline. His head coach, Juwan Howard, objected — and was called for a technical foul.

Up until that moment, it had been that type of game for the Wolverines, who were playing their first contest in 23 days and looked predictably rusty. They trailed by 12 at halftime and seemed in danger of being blown out in Madison, Wis.

Michigan

Then Smith caught Davison‘s elbow and the tide turned UFA.

“I think we were trying to have the fire lit already,” said freshman center Hunter Dickinson. “I think we were trying to come out there at the beginning of the second half with that fire but I think we came together after the foul and really said, ‘This is our time. This is the run we have to go on right now in order to come back and win this game.’ ”

“Tough win versus a very good team in Wisconsin. Winning a game like this on the road does a lot. It says a lot about the character of this group.”

Curry leads Warriors to 114-91 victory, ending Spurs’ streak.

SAN ANTONIO

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Even after three NBA championships and two MVP awards, Stephen Curry has never looked better to his coach.

Curry scored 32 points and the Golden State Warriors dominated San Antonio 114-91 on Tuesday night, snapping the Spurs’ three-game winning streak.

”This is the best I’ve ever seen him, just from a confidence and strength standpoint. ”Two-time MVP. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look better.”

”I worked my butt off over the offseason,” Curry said. ”I’m just happy to be playing. I feel strong. I feel in rhythm, in ultimate control of my game. Shots are falling. ”

”Man, I have to go back in the fault for that,” Warriors veteran Draymond Green said. ”That was nice. It was very close to an (Michael Jordan) little flip. That was a good one for sure. That was up there.”

‘Nothing high flying or above the rim about that,” Curry said. ”I’ll take that recognition.

Golden State ended a five-game losing streak in San Antonio. Eric Paschall had 15 points and Andrew Wiggins added 14 for the Warriors.

It was the Spurs’ final home game before embarking on their annual nearly month-long road trip while the city’s Stock Show & Rodeo is held at the AT&T Center.

Extra-inning, doubleheader rule changes back for 2021 MLB season.

Extra-inning

Extra-inning, doubleheader rule changes back for 2021 season originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago.

A couple of the more noteworthy rule changes enacted for the shortened 2020 baseball season will be back in 2021.

According to multiple reports, Major League Baseball and the MLB. Players Association have agreed on health-and-safety rules for spring training and the regular season.

Among those rules are the shortening of doubleheader games to seven innings apiece and the rule that starts every extra inning with a runner on second base.

The changes received mixed reviews from baseball fans in 2020, particularly the extra-inning rule change. Which was a dramatic departure from previous years.

Certain aspects of these changes from seasons past are undoubtedly in response to the pandemic. Shortening the length of doubleheaders and attempting to shorten the length of games that spin into extra innings reduce the amount of time.

Players are in close proximity to one another at a time when social distancing continues to be encouraged UFA.

But baseball known to have mulled these changes prior to the pandemic, with both the extra-inning rules, specifically, in effect in the minor leagues in 2019 as part of experimentation to decrease the length of games.

Not part of the reported agreement are the designated hitter’s return to the National League or the expanded postseason field .

Todd Gurley on Jared Goff trade: Another situation where I wasn’t surprised.

Todd Gurley

On this day two years ago, Jared Goff and Todd Gurley were playing in Super Bowl LIII with the Rams UFA.

Todd Gurley had signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension just before the start of the 2018 regular season. Goff would sign a four-year, $134 million extension in August 2019.

Now neither player will be with Los Angeles when the blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford is finalized at the start of the new league year in March.

It’s been a fairly remarkable turn of events for both players over the last 24 months. Gurley was released last March and signed a one-year deal with the Falcons. He rushed for just 678 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games in 2020 — the lowest yardage total of his career.

Since 2019, Goff is second in the NFL with 38 giveaways. Only Jameis Winston has more, and he didn’t start a game in 2020.

But during a Wednesday appearance on NFL Network, Gurley took a bit of a swipe at his old team when addressing the trade.

“Well, another situation where I surprised again,” Gurley said, via NFL Media. “But you know, I like Goff, I like Goff, he’s a good guy. Don’t nobody care about who’s a good guy.

I’m just happy he’ll be able to go somewhere and hopefully those guys welcome him with open arms and just not be judgmental and just let him play. He’s been a No. 1 pick for a reason, and he has a lot of balls left in him.”

As Goff said himself, Gurley thinks the change could be a positive development for the 26-year-old quarterback.

“It could be a good thing for him, you know? Just add an extra chip on your shoulder,” Gurley said. “A lot of players like to play with chips on their shoulder.

It’s a lot different when you’re a franchise quarterback. You take your team to the Super Bowl and two years later you’re on a whole other team. Like I told him, man, love him, just want him to be happy and keep doing what you’re doing.”

Head coach Brad Stevens related he wasn’t sure if Walker would play in Wednesday night’s game against the Sacramento Kings. But the UConn product expected to sit on the second night of back-to-backs this season.
